People

Small Lot Wine & Spirits was founded to champion wines that speak to their place of origin. Mirri Brook was created in partnership with Qualia Wines Australia to fill a void in balanced, varietally-correct wines at affordable prices. Chief Winemaker, John Pezzaniti, is also Qualia’s CEO and oversees a winemaking team sourcing from sustainable growers to deliver exceptional, consumer-driven wines. The Mirri Brook label was designed by Minnesota native, Kailey Delozier, to connect consumers to the sunny Australian river land.

Place

Located along the mighty Murray River near the borders of Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia, the town of Mildura is a bustling commercial hub set against a backdrop of natural wonder. The river flats give way to pockets of land dotted with lakes, and rolling hills and steep cliffs catching the sun’s natural beauty. This area is the agricultural heart of Australia producing much of the citrus fruit, produce and grapes for the region.

Passion

We sought to answer the question: Is it possible to find new world Chard and Cab that is authentic, varietally-correct (aka tastes good!), AND affordable? Our search for that answer led us to Qualia Wines, and ultimately, the creation of Mirri Brook. This is our passion, delivered to YOU! The name 'Mirri' comes from an Australian First Nations word for 'The Sun'. Mirri Brook brings the bright, SUNNY flavors of Australia for you to enjoy with friends, and reflects the optimistic outlook of the Australian people.

About John Pezzaniti, the winemaker

John is the current generation of an Italian/Australian family winemaking tradition that dates back over six generations to the land of his forefathers in Calabria.

He completed Applied Science at the Phillip Institute of Technology and Wine Science at Melbourne University before commencing his career as a winemaker. John’s first position was a cellar hand followed by eight years of technical research and development in the local citrus industry. He joined Qualia Wines in 1996.

A lot of large wineries have “bean counters” at their helm but with John steering the ship, Qualia Wines has its roots planted firmly in winemaking.
